We make our own... Coffee Liqueur
If you’re really keen on upgrading your hot chocolate with a splash of coffee liqueur, or you love a White Russian cocktail, you could be looking at spending £15 or more for a bottle of the good stuff. Kahlua is excellent, no arguments here, but we like to get stuck in and make our own.
If we don’t dodge the challenge of making our own cleaning spray and pasta, why would we not see if we can make our own frugal version of a delicious coffee liqueur?
Well - turns we can easily make our own, for £4.60 a litre. That’s a significant saving!
Vodka - 1.5 to 2 cups (we used a pretty basic supermarket own brand here…)
Ground coffee - 3 tbsp
Water - 2.5 cups
Vanilla essence - 2 tsps
Demerara sugar - 0.5 cups
Dark Muscovado Sugar - 0.5 cups
Combine coffee grounds and 1.5 cups of water in a glass jar; shake; leave to infuse for 12 hours, or longer if possible (and if you want the coffee flavour to be really nice and strong).
Strain the liquid, ideally through muslin cloth, a coffee filter (reusable for preference) or a sieve if all else fails, and reserve the cold-brewed coffee liquid.
Add the remaining 1 cup of water and the sugar into a pan; bring to the boil and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer for ten minutes, as if you’re making a simple syrup.
Add the vanilla, vodka and coffee infusion; simmer for five more minutes. Allow to cool, and then strain into one of your many, many kilners or glass jars (seriously, they’re taking over our kitchen at this point).
This makes about a litre of liqueur, and should last you a good long time.
